For Referring Physicians: Dr. Sean McMillan, DO

How to refer a patient to Dr. McMillan.

For physicians

Referring a patient

Sean McMillan, DO, built his practice in Burlington Township around a sports medicine focus centered on the shoulder and hip. His fellowship training was in arthroscopic sports medicine of the shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, following an orthopedic surgery residency with the Peninsula Hospital Consortium and North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems in Long Island, New York, and medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

That training lines up with the referrals we are best positioned to see: hip and thigh muscle strains and contusions, muscle injuries and avulsions, hip arthritis, and lateral or snapping hip syndrome all sit inside the shoulder-and-hip arthroscopic focus his fellowship built. He also manages lateral ankle instability surgically, using the Brostrum procedure when bracing and rehabilitation have not restored stability.

On the procedural side, Dr. McMillan performs arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee, meniscal repair, reverse total shoulder replacement, and the mi-eye procedure. A patient under consideration for shoulder reconstruction, hip arthroscopy for labral or impingement pathology, or knee arthroscopy for meniscal injury is going to a practice built around exactly that scope of work, not a general orthopedic referral.

Background on his training is on his profile page, and the full breakdown of urgency tiers and workup expectations is on the referral criteria guide.

Dr. McMillan is accepting new patients.

What happens at my patient's first visit?

Your patient sees Dr. McMillan directly, not a resident or physician assistant, at the first visit.

The visit includes a focused history, a physical exam targeted to the shoulder, hip, or knee complaint you referred for, and a review of any imaging you have already obtained. Dr. McMillan completed fellowship training in arthroscopic sports medicine of the shoulder, hip, knee and elbow at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts, and that training shapes the exam: the emphasis falls on functional mechanics and activity demands rather than a general orthopedic screen. His full training background is listed on his physician bio.

For physicians

How will I receive the consultation findings?

A written consultation note reaches you within 48 hours of the visit, sent by fax or secure portal, whichever you have on file with our office.

The note states the exam findings, the working diagnosis, and the recommended plan, whether that plan is further imaging, a course of conservative treatment, or a surgical discussion. If the plan changes after a follow-up visit or after surgery, you receive an updated note at that point as well.

Will my patient return to my care after treatment?

Yes, for most patients.

Routine medical management, including primary care and non-orthopedic issues, stays with you throughout. For patients treated non-surgically for conditions such as snapping hip syndrome or a hip and thigh muscle strain, Dr. McMillan typically discharges the patient back to your care once the course of treatment concludes. For patients who undergo arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, or knee, he follows the patient through the post-operative period and then returns them to your care. If a new or related issue develops later, the practice's referral criteria guide outlines when a second referral is appropriate.
